Job Description DEFINITION


Under direction, investigates and reports death cases which fall within the jurisdiction of the Marin County Sheriff's Office - Coroner's Division; takes charge of the death scene and the body of the deceased; safeguards the personal property of the deceased; locates and notifies next of kin; and does other duties as required.


CLASS CHARACTERISTICS


The Coroner's Investigator is a journey level position and is expected to function with initiative and considerable independence within policy and procedural guidelines.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Note: The following duties are performed by employees in this classification; however, employees may perform related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed
•Receives reports of death and determines if they are within the jurisdiction of the Marin County Sheriff's Office - Coroner's Division.
•Investigates deaths coming under the jurisdiction of the Marin County Sheriff's Office - Coroner's Division.
•Assists in establishing cause, manner and circumstances of death.
•Confers with law enforcement agencies to coordinate investigations of deaths resulting from criminal acts.
•Responsible for the bodies, evidence and property related to the deceased at the death scene.
•Makes positive identification of the deceased and may take fingerprints and photographs for identification and case file purposes.
•May notify family of the deceased.
•Interviews witnesses, physicians, police officers, and family members to obtain facts concerning deaths.
•Prepares official reports of investigation.
•May be required to substantiate findings and/or testify in court or other proceedings.
•Responsible for and may assist in the removal of the deceased.
•May work on special projects as assigned.

Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES


Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed below.

Either
One year of college thirty (30) semester units from an accredited college or university. AND one year of investigatory experience which has included researching information, interviewing individuals, and preparing detailed written reports for governmental or other related agencies. Course work in criminal justice, biology, health/life sciences or other closely related fields is highly desirable.
Note: Additional investigatory experience may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.
OR
Two years of full-time experience as an investigator with a county coroner or medical examiner.
Certificates and Licenses
Successful completion of training in the laws of arrest as mandated in Section 832 of the California Penal Code within the first twelve (12) months of appointment.

Failure to complete the training for laws of arrest and complete the Coroner's Death Investigation course within twelve (12) months of appointment to the position will result in the termination of employment.

This job requires travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class vehicle driven and must meet automobile insurability requirements of the County.

KNOWLEDGE OF

•Interviewing and investigative techniques and procedures.
•Standard techniques for gathering and preserving physical evidence.
•Basic medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology.
•California Penal Code, Government Code, Health and Safety Code and other codes relating to the function, jurisdiction and authority of the Coroner.
•Office procedures, methods, and equipment including assignment-specific database systems.


ABILITY TO

•Work effectively in unpleasant conditions, including inclement weather, with possible exposure to toxic chemicals and other biohazards.
•Exercise good judgment in analyzing evidence and drawing conclusions from it.
•Maintain effective relations with law enforcement agencies, other County departments, public and private organizations and the public.
•Deal tactfully with persons especially under emergency and emotional situations.
•Effectively interview witnesses and others related to cases.
•Articulate findings of evidence upon completion of the case; prepare accurate and comprehensive reports on the findings of an investigation.
•Take photographs and fingerprints.
•Testify in court or other proceedings in a direct and concise manner.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


Must meet the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) required minimum standards for Peace Officer at time of appointment, including citizenship, age, character, and education.

Must be willing to carry a firearm.
