National Institute for Jail Operations

 The National Institute for Jail Operations (NIJO) provides resources for sheriffs to make jails safer, more secure and protect against liability and adverse publicity. Resources and services provided by NIJO include the • creation and maintenance of legal-based guidelines specific to states and circuit courts, • comprehensive staff jail training both online and in-person • complete jail inspections including self-audits and NIJO Accreditation, • case expert testimony, and • legal-based policy and development. NIJO was formed in 2011 dedicated to serve those who operate jails, detention and correctional facilities. The resources provided by NIJO are a far departure from the past traditions of "best practices" that may undermine administrative discretion and do not reflect current case law uniquely applicable to each facility. In corrections, with limited budgets and resources NIJO represents jails and detention facilities by providing the most current information and resources from a welcomed, trusted source.
